A Very Cool Hammock Mod

Once again, I find myself tearing apart my gear looking for areas I can reduce bulk and shave weight. I enjoy using a hammock when camping, and it has come down to my hammock being the next "bulk/weight" issue I plan to attack.

My hammock isn't "heavy" or overly bulky. In fact, it is very comparible to most light weight hammock options on the market. That said, I want it to be more compact and even lighter.

As the weight is the lesser of the two "problems", I first started to search online and see if there were smaller hammocks on the market that were still comfortable/functional. I concluded that my hammock is pretty standard.

I plan to, in the near future, purchase some materials and attempt to fabricate a hammock measuring 8' 6" x 3'. Assuming I use a full 6" on each end for the channels, the finished length will be 7' 6" (1 1/2 feet shorter than average) and 3' wide (2 feet narrower than average).

More on this project in a future post.

While searching online, I came across an interesting hammock mod that goes by 2 different names. "Knotty Mod" and/or "Stretch-side mod".

This mod is designed to reduce the sloppy excess material of the hammock, while making it possible to sit in your hammock without fear of putting strain on the material.
